Dr. Christopher Hurt

Our own Dr. Christopher Hurt was featured by the UNC School of Medicine website as a “Featured Physician”! There is a short interview and information about what Chris is working on.

What is your clinical expertise?

My clinical expertise is in the treatment of HIV, hepatitis C and sexually transmitted infections. I have a special interest in the sexual health of men who have sex with men (both HIV positive and uninfected.)

Tell us about your current role in the Department of Medicine.

I’ve been an assistant professor in the Department since January 2011. Patient care-wise, I have a weekly continuity clinic and precept two of our outstanding clinical fellows. I also serve as the director of the ID Clinic’s hepatitis C treatment team and our clinical working group for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The remainder of my time is split between public health-oriented HIV research and medical education. Through my work with the North Carolina AIDS Training and Education Center (NCATEC), I get to visit various clinics around the state and educate providers about HIV-related topics.

What current project or initiative at UNC are you involved in that you are excited about?

I’m pretty excited about the opportunity to help students in UNC’s new Physician Assistant Program learn about the presentation and management of different infectious diseases. I serve as the coordinator for the ID portion of the PA Program’s Clinical Medicine course.

What is your hometown?

I grew up in Largo, Florida, which is on the west coast about halfway between Clearwater and St. Petersburg.
